The choice of a ski helmet is made with different criteria that all have their importance. Size, ventilation and weight and hygiene are elements to take into account when trying out or buying a ski helmet.

Size

When selecting your ski helmet, size is a fundamental consideration. Before heading to the shop, take a moment to measure your head using a tape measure. Position it just below your forehead, behind your ears. The resulting measurement in centimeters will guide your size choice.

Typically, the size corresponds to the following measurements:

Size Head measurement
XXS 51-52 cm
XS 53-54 cm
S 55-56 cm
M 57-58 cm
L 59-60 cm
XL 60-61 cm

When trying on helmets, don’t hesitate to fasten the chinstrap and move your head to ensure a proper fit. The helmet should feel comfortable without exerting pressure on the front or temples. Also, ensure that your helmet allows you to wear sunglasses effortlessly.

Weight

The weight of your helmet plays a vital role in ensuring optimal comfort on the slopes. In general, a helmet should weigh around 300 g on average and not exceed 700 g. If you prioritize lightness, consider a molded helmet, which is lighter but may come at a higher cost. Remember, the lighter your helmet, the more enjoyable your day on the slopes, with fewer distractions impeding your movements.

Ventilation

Wearing a helmet can sometimes make your head warm, leading to perspiration. Therefore, it’s important to choose a helmet that effectively evacuates sweat. To avoid discomfort from perspiration or the cold, opt for a helmet equipped with a ventilation system that allows you to control the airflow by opening or closing vents.

Hygiene

For enhanced hygiene and convenience, select a helmet with detachable lining. After a day of skiing, it’s wise to remove the lining before cleaning it. It’s worth noting that most helmets feature a removable double interior, providing you with a fresh and clean experience on the slopes.
