What is ice skating?

A fun and entertaining activity

Gliding cannot only be done on snow with skis: it can also be done on ice with skates. Sometimes an Olympic sport, sometimes an artistic activity, ice skating is much liked by children but also adults. Choose your ice skates and you are ready to tour the iced water, pushing yourself while keeping balance. This activity can also be done in tranquility with the family, but it can also become a real speed competition for lovers of thrills.

Who can skate and under which conditions?

Children, even the smallest, and adolescents or parents can do this activity, it interests all. This also lets the youngest ones get introduced to winter sports, while learning to balance. Ice skating is usually easier than ski: on skates, you are freer with your movements and thus able to coordinate your movements better. The only requirement for ice skating: to really feel it.

What equipment do you need to ice skate?

Ice skates

This is the essential for practicing this activity: ice skates. They are all made the same way, with a leather shoe and a metal rod, there are however different types of ice skates. For a sporting practice, favor a rigid skate, with a profiled blade for the excessive practice of skating. For practicing for fun choose a pair that is comfortable and light. If you skate occasionally renting a pair is better, if not, a pair costs around €30-100.

Warm and comfortable clothes

Ice skating, which can be done indoor or outdoor, needs a lot of cold to conserve the ice. That is why falling is easy: that is why it is recommended to equip yourself well. Preferably, opt for ski clothes, especially if you’re a beginner: this would help arm you of the shock in case you fall. Don’t forget to wear gloves, a hat and a scarf. The price of your equipment depends on what you already have, but a specific purchase is not necessary for ice skating.

Your protections

This also depends on your wishes and your skating level. If you skate easily it is possible to wear knee pads to protect them in case you fall. If you are a beginner, we recommend renting a helmet, gloves for protection and knee pads. There are also blade guards for the most anxious. And thus you can skate in all security.
